Honl Photo Professional Lighting System: Light Modifiers

If you have interest in light modifications and creative studio flash photography but have never heard of Honl Photo, well it’s about time that you do!

David Honl is the mastermind behing Honl Photo. He is the originator & designer of the world-renowned line of HonlPhoto small flash accessories, and he continually design and field test new products during his travels. It’s not uncommon to see David’s images appearing in well established publications such as Newsweek, People Magazine, New York Times, Professional Photographer.

If you are at all serious about going to off-camera flash, using Speedlights (or Speedlites) or any other portable flash, you’ll want to add Honl Photo’s light modifiers to your kit. Notice, I said “any portable flash” and not just Canon or Nikon. The Honl Photo modifiers are brand agnostic—you can use any brand or style of hot-shoe flash or any mixture thereof. Whether you use one or a dozen portable flash devices, you’ll benefit from being able to seriously control your light.

Just for a few hundred Ringgit, you can get yourself  The Honl Photo Speed System which is almost as good as having a full studio – consisting of durable light modifiers for shoe-mount flashes including an assortment of grids, snoots, reflectors, gobos and gels.

The advantage lies in its  portability and the relatively low cost of hot-shoe strobes to enhance portable flash lighting.

The heart of the Honl Photo system is the Speed Strap which you will need to attach to a flash. The modifiers which you have can be attached to the Speed Strap with fabric fastener.  The beauty of the Speed Strap is you can remove it from your strobes without disfiguring them. Its non-slip inner surface keeps it in place when attaching and removing any of the modifiers (or multiple modifiers). The Honl Photo Starter Kit comes with 2 of these Speed Straps, but you can purchase more if needed.

Here are some of the light modifiers by Honl Photo:

COLOR CORRECTION FILTER (GEL) KIT

Besides just shaping the light, Honl Photo also makes filter kits. This one includes the filters necessary to color correct the light, such as when using tungsten, fluorescent, or daylight ambient lighting and you want to change your strobe to another base or enhance the existing. This kit includes CTB, CTO and Full+Green gels with velcro attachments to fit the Speed Strap.

Includes two each of five different colored Lee filters, which attach to the Speed Strap. While the aforementioned filter kit is useful for color correction, this kit is quite useful to add special effects using the included (two each) Yellow, Bright Red, Just Blue, Moss Green, and Heavy Frost Lee gels. There are also two 1/2 CTB gels included.

Color Correction:

To color correct your strobes for tungsten, fluorescent or cool daylight lighting environments. Use CTO filters to match your flash output to tungsten lights, or simply to give a pleasing warm tone to your portraits. Use Full + Green to match your flash output to fluorescent lights.  Includes 2 each of these filters:

* Full CTO
* 1/2 CTO
* 1/4 CTO
* Full+Green
* 1/2 CTB

Color Effects:

Use to add artistic and theatrical color to your images, whether lighting your subject or a background. Includes 2 each of these filters:

* Yellow
* Bright Red
* Just Blue
* Moss Green
* Heavy Frost

GOLD-SILVER REFLECTOR (ZEBRA 5″)

GOLD-SILVER REFLECTOR (ZEBRA 8″)

Concentrate the light from your shoe-mount flash for dramatic cinematic lighting with our easy to use snoot/reflector. Perfect for everything from dramatic portraits to concentrating light on background elements. Made of tough ballistic nylon exterior with 3 choices of interior reflectors that all produce a soft falloff. Chose gray for a neutral soft light, white for slightly more contrast, and Gold/Silver for a slightly warm effect for pleasing skin tones. Fits most any on-camera shoe-mount strobe. 8.5″ long.

Attaches and removes in seconds using our popular Speed Strap (not included).

Honl Speed Snoots are adjustable to fit a wide variety of flashes, including Canon’s 430 to 580 Speedlites and Nikon’s SB24 to SB900 Speedlights.

SPEED GRID 1/4 and 1/8

The honeycombed, 1/4″ Speed Grid narrows the strobe’s beam to better focus it on a smaller area. I found it quite acceptable for isolating portions of my subject and give that section more prominence. Honl Photo also makes a 1/8 honeycomb Speed Grid which narrows the light even further (not part of the Starter Kit).

SHORTY SPEED SNOOT 5″

Narrows the light even further to concentrate the light for dramatic effect. This is a shorter version of the 8″ I mentioned below and can narrow the light, but not quite as much as the eight inch.

SHORTY SPEED SNOOT 8″

SPEED GOBO

Keep light from flaring into your lens when using your speedlight as a background or hair light. The Speed Gobo attaches quickly with a Speed Strap (required, not included). Reversible, tough ballistic-type black nylon on one side, and 2 choices on the other so you can also use as a bounce card

TRAVELLER8 SOFT BOX

Create beautiful soft light from David’s innovative new softbox design, with the quality and sturdiness you’ve come to expect from all Honl Photo Professional lighting products. Extremely easy to setup and attach to your shoe-mount flash unit using our popular Speed Strap (included). Folds flat to tuck into your camera bag, and weighs in at less than 4 ounces. Provides a pleasing circular catchlight in your subject’s eyes. Fits most any shoe-mount flash by Nikon or Canon as well as larger units like the Vivitar 285.

Best suited for off-camera work, but it performs very well on-camera, too. All you need to do is to attach the front translucent screen and pull the softbox over your flash head with a Honl Speed Strap already attached. Unlike many other Honl Photo modifiers, this softbox includes a strap, so you don’t have to purchase it separately.

Spectralight, the versatile flash diffuser

If you’re a new photographer, diffusers are essential the moment you start shooting with an external flash. While getting my first ever flash, the 550 EX years ago, I immediately noticed the differences between shots with a diffuser and those without.

In short, unless we’re trying to create an intense mood (which is rare), a flash diffuser does much to soften the light, giving a pleasant appearance to the photographs.

Why Spectralight ?

The Spectra Light Diffuser, like other brands out in the market, is a flash diffuser tool designed for hotshoe or portable flashes or flash guns. It is unique because of its versatility, portability and design. It is designed to look good, as it goes well and “integrated” with most hotshoe flashes in the market today.  Because of its high quality ABS construction, it exudes professionalism and durability – attributes professional photographers want. Thanks to the unique ballhead design, Spectra Light frame panel rotates and swivels at almost any angle, giving the photographer a wide range of bounce/reflection a

ngle capability. Likewise, since users can also make their own creative panels,  they would soon discover that the Spectra Light Diffuser truly is versatile.

Reviewed :

Spectra Light has revolutionized the flash accessory system, it offers a multitude of usage including additional DIY concepts that you can apply with the spectra frame. While the effective use of the bounce card matches the DFD, it clearly demonstrate that It has more feature to offer because of interchangeable Spectra Frame. I did not use the soft casing as flag since you can easily attach other black cardboards to it which is more lighter. The Spectra Light is true to its claim “Versatile Flash Diffuser System”. If you are a strobist It can give you different ideas of use. For example, attaching different kinds of gels and other DIY modifiers. Its probably better to call the Spectra Light “The all-in-one wonder”.
